This year, post quarantine times, spending for Valentines Day is up a whopping 44% from last year. Whether this is to raise our spirits or quietly rebel against being quarantined last year we may never know, but instead, were here to find out: is it worth it?
30% (thats 3 in 10) Americans are relying on their credit cards to pay for Valentines Day this year. While paying for the treats, gifts, and outings, don't forget about paying for that interest too. Unromantic fact: 43% plan to hide their newly taken-on debt from their significant other. Bad idea. Statistics also demonstrate a significant percentage of people spending more than they could afford just to impress their V-Day date. Yikes.
So how do you celebrate the Romance Holiday without breaking the bank? Heres some ideas:
- Aim for a day thats not the 14th. If your honey is happy to celebrate Valentines Day a day earlier or a day later, it can really reduce your costs. Not only will flower deliveries probably cost less, but restaurant reservations might be easier to get and you can avoid the pricey holiday fixed-price option. Good thing Valentines Day is on a Monday this year, celebrate over the weekend!
- Get the budget flowers. Seriously. Grocery stores have really upped their floral department game lately, and you can get some gorgeous arrangements for a fraction of the price you would find at a florist.
- Go sentimental. A simple love letter can be a surprise hit, as can taking your partner to revisit the place where you first met or had your first date. Romance is in the air.
- Dine-in, dessert out. Not only can a special, home-cooked meal be an amazing gift, but it can save you a bunch of money on Valentines Day. Then, you can go out to a favorite dessert place afterward. Yummy.
Just because youre on a budget doesnt mean Valentines Day has to be any less special or romantic. Its better to be responsible and protect your credit while still building some beautiful memories with your loved one.
