Is a medical bill messing up your credit score? Sarah had the same problem.

A bill she didn't think was fair was hurting her credit. She really wanted to get that medical bill off her credit report. She tried to fix it herself, but it didn't work. She felt stuck.

Then, she found us, ASAP Credit Repair. And you know what? Taking bad stuff off credit reports is exactly what we do best.

All About Medical Debt and Credit Scores

Medical Debt and Credit Scores

If a medical bill isn't paid, the doctor's office or hospital might send it to a collection agency like ERC Collections. These companies are allowed to try and collect the debt, but they have to follow certain rules.

When a collection agency reports a medical bill to the credit bureaus, it can lower your credit score. Which means it will be bad for you! Lenders, like banks, use it to decide if they should give you a loan.

A low credit score can make it difficult to get loans for things like cars or even rent an apartment.

HIPAA Law and Medical Collections

HIPAA protects your private health information, even with medical debt. If a healthcare provider sends your bill to collections, they can share limited details—like

📌 your name,

📌amount owed,

📌and service date

—so the agency can do its job.

However, HIPAA ensures this data is still protected and cannot be misused. If you believe your information was mishandled, you can file a complaint with the Department of Health and Human Services. Know your rights to safeguard your privacy and finances.

How to Remove Medical Collections from Credit Report

Sarah had already tried disputing the collection herself—but nothing changed.

That’s because medical debt requires a different approach.

Instead of sending a generic dispute, we demanded proof that the collection agency had the legal right to report the debt.

📌 Step 1: Request Complete Documentation from the Collection Agency

Under federal laws, a debt collector must provide full validation of a medical collection. We requested:

Proof of Sarah’s HIPAA authorization (did she even authorize the release of her medical info?)
The original signed patient intake forms from the hospital or provider
An itemized billing statement showing what was charged and why
Insurance Explanation of Benefits (EOB) proving the bill was processed correctly
A full account ledger with payment history and balance breakdown
Debt ownership transfer documents (proof that the collection agency had the legal right to collect)
Proof that Sarah was properly notified before the collection was reported

📌 Step 2: Apply Pressure Using Consumer Protection Laws

When the collection agency responded, we found major legal violations.

🚨 No valid HIPAA authorization on file → They had no legal right to report her medical info.
🚨 Billing errors → The provider overcharged her after insurance had already made a partial payment.
🚨 Lack of notification → They never sent her a proper bill before sending it to collections.

Under the FDCPA and FCRA, inaccurate or unverifiable medical collections must be deleted.

We sent a formal demand for deletion—or legal action would be taken.

🔥 Within 30 days, the collection was deleted from Sarah’s credit report.
